As a Stop the Bleed instructor, I often ask my students a sobering question: “How long does it take for someone to bleed out from a femoral artery wound?”
The answer usually shocks them. It’s about three minutes.
Now, think about the average response time for an ambulance. Even in a well-staffed city, it’s often seven to ten minutes. In rural areas, it can be much longer. If you do the math, there is a terrifying gap between when a life-threatening injury occurs and when professional help arrives.
That gap is where you come in.
We’ve been conditioned to think of police, fire, and EMS as "first responders." But in reality, they are the secondresponders. The person standing next to the victim—the bystander, the coworker, the parent—is the true first responder.
Stop the Bleed isn't just a medical course; it’s a mindset shift. It’s about moving from a state of panic to a state of purpose.
In my classes, we strip away the complexity. You don't need a medical degree to save a life; you need to master three specific actions:
I’ve seen students walk into my classroom nervous, worried they’ll "mess up" or make things worse. I tell them the same thing every time: The only way to make a life-threatening bleed worse is to do nothing.
When you know how to Stop the Bleed, you aren't just a witness to a tragedy; you are the bridge to survival. You are the one who ensures that a father comes home, a child survives a playground accident, or a neighbor survives a DIY project gone wrong.
You’ve spent three minutes reading this. In that same amount of time, a life can be lost—or it can be saved.
If you haven’t taken a class recently, come see me. If you have, take your kit out and practice. Familiarize yourself with your gear until your hands move without your brain having to think.
Because when those three minutes start ticking, you won’t have time to Google a tutorial. You’ll only have the training you’ve put into your hands.
